BENEFITING: The V Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 05, 2017
On November 5, I will be running in the New York City Marathon in order to raise money for cancer research. My goal is to raise $3,500, all of which will be be donated to the V Foundation for Cancer Research. For those that don’t know, Jim Valvano was a college basketball coach most famous for leading the North Carolina State Wolfpack to a National Championship in 1983. Valvano died of bone cancer in 1993, but co-founded the V Foundation for Cancer Research a little before he died. I have seen the effects of cancer on many family members and friends. I have had 2 aunts lose their battle in the past few years, and recently learned that one of my high school friends is having surgery to remove a tumor. One case that has always stuck with me is that of Ronnie Smith, one of my coaches in high school. Coach Smith was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and died shortly thereafter. He helped me believe in myself at a critical point in my life and I am certain there are hundreds of his former students and players who would echo that sentiment. Coach Smith, Aunt Roz, and Aunt Sandy are a few people who I will be running for on November 5, but I run for your loved ones as well.
I am grateful for the opportunity to run in an iconic race while supporting cancer research. I would be immensely grateful for your support!
