September 2nd marks an extremely special occasion for Joan Benford and her family. This year, Joan will be celebrating her 90th birthday! To celebrate this remarkable milestone, please consider a gift in her honor to Cusack Care Center, the long-term care facility which Joan has called home for the past two years.
Throughout her life, Joan, also known by her birth name Johanna, and fondly called “Miss Joan” as well, has witnessed first-hand almost a century of so many incredible events. Born in 1926, she was a young girl during the Great Depression, where her father always maintained his job as a barrel maker; in high school sewing class, she would reminisce about sewing jackets for the troops in World War II; and, who could forget the stories of the Blizzard of ’47, during which she walked to her job at The Western Electric in Kearny from Jersey City, and back home!
Joan Benford is a dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. After starting her family, she stayed home and served as a cook, seamstress, baker, and caregiver to make sure her six children grew up in an organized and traditional household. She derived all of her joy by taking care of her family and her home. Joan was a loving wife to Charles, who she never stopped caring for even later in life, when he began to lose his eyesight and suffer from Alzheimer's. After Charles's death and a horrible fall that caused her a broken hip, Joan began to develop dementia and her mental and physical health declined.
Today, we are fortunate for Joan to be in the safe and encouraging environment of Cusack Care Center. For the past two years, Cusack has given Joan the personalized and individual attention she needs to continue to battle her dementia, as well as her physical struggles which have come with old age. Thank you Cusack Center for providing our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, who has cared for so many throughout her life, the care and dignity she deserves!
