BENEFITING: INTERNATIONAL SURGICAL HEALTH INITIATIVES INC
EVENT: ISHI Missions 2017
EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2016
At the end of October 2015, ISHI volunteers travelled to Peru and performed 60 surgeries in 4 days. This was one of the best experiences of my life thus far. It was my first medical mission and my first trip to South America; this was more fulfilling than I could have ever expected. I’m hooked. I’m looking to go on another mission within the next 6-9 months. I’ll keep you all posted!
Here's the blurb that NJMS Department of Surgery posted on Facebook about the October 2015 ISHI trip to Trujillo, Peru:
"NJMS Surgery faculty, residents, and medical students joined several other volunteers on a nine-day mission to Madre de Cristo in Trujillo, Peru, sponsored by the International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI). This was my first time volunteering for a mission, and the teamwork and communication between volunteers was awesome! This, along with the pre-mission coordination between ISHI and the local hospital, contributed to the overall success of the mission. Thankfully, we have a strong ongoing relationship with the local hospital staff.
We arrived at the hospital on Sunday and triaged patients throughout Sunday and Monday. We successfully completed 60 cases in four days, including an emergent appendectomy which came into the Emergency Department during our time at the hospital. We provided education to the local nurses, and to foreign medical students who were participating in elective rotations in Trujillo. All of our patients were discharged prior to our departure. We continue to be in close contact with the local hospital staff to follow up on the progress of our patients post-operatively.
This experience has inspired me to continue volunteer work internationally. I hope to return to Trujillo, Peru in the future, as the need for medical care in this area is great."
