The Starbucks Foundation was created as part of our commitment to help our communities thrive.
The Crisis: More than 20 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed. And yet 3.4 million avaailable jobs remain unfilled because job seekers lack the necessary skills. The survival of the American Dream depends on our ability to address this crisis.
The Mission: To use the historic moment of the national party convention to put the spotlight on solutions to our jobs crisis. We believe that, whatever our position on the role of government, we can all come together around the cause of job creation, since taking care of our own, as Bruce Springsteen puts it in his 2012 hit, is at the heart of the American spirit.
Our goal is to both help change the narrative away from the fatalistic acceptance of our unemployment crisis and to help accelerate and scale job creation by tapping into our surplus of creativity, ingenuity, and compassion. Our partners will mobilize their networks, secure promises from leaders in every sector, and accelerate job creation and fill job openings. By doing so, we will act on John Gardner's belief that "what we have before us are some breathtaking opportunities disguised as insoluble problems."
Goals: To identify, support and spotlight individuals and organizations creating jobs in a scalable way. To address the skills gap that is preventing job seekers from filling available jobs. To foster conditions that allow innovative companies to thrive.
