BENEFITING: American Jewish World Service
AJWS is an organization that supports local NGOs in 19 countries around the world to improve human and civil rights. Unlike other aid organizations that swoop in and act as if they know what's best, AJWS works with local partners who have a better handle on what their communities need. I went on a ten-day mission with AJWS to the Dominican Republic. We visited a school in a slum that had 175 students with 4 teachers. These students are not welcome in other schools because their parents lack documentation. We met with transgender sex workers who described being kicked out of their homes as young teens, and resorting to sex work because they were barred from employment and education because of their identity. We met rural women who had to fight a legal system that originally required battered women to personally deliver restraining orders to their abusive partners. As I find myself in the process of a job hunt, I want to give back to an organization that is doing so much good work, and that also inspired me through this once in a lifetime experience. I am hoping that some of the karma we send to AJWS will come back to help us all.
