The founder of the organization, Joel, a disabled Army Veteran himself moved to Colorado in 2003 and enlisted into the Colorado Air National Guard 140th Security Forces Squadron. After returning from a short tour in 2004 and receiving a conditional release from the COANG, Joel enlisted into active duty with the United States Army. Upon completion of infantry and airborne school, Joel went on to complete Special Forces Assessment and Selection and began the Qualification Course in June of 2006.
After suffering a series of injuries throughout training, having fell short of a long-sought dream of becoming a Green Beret, Joel was eventually medically retired from service in 2008 as a result. After being medically retired, Joel moved to Colorado along with his family and enrolled into college. It was during this time that Joel began treatment for injuries at the Denver VA hospital.
Unable to fulfill obligations with the increasing pain and severity of symptoms, Joel left school in 2010 to focus on rehabilitation and employment. During the same time, after reporting an increase in pain and symptoms, Joel was notified that he lost his appeal to the VA and benefits would be decreased. As a result of the decrease, along with an inability to work, he entered into a payment plan with their mortgage company in an attempt to save their home. However, the payment plan offered was handled incorrectly, forcing their home into short-sale status. Immediately, Joel challenged the VA's decision and took active steps to re-establish his disability status and access to benefits. Eventually, after writing to his local Congressman, Joel was able to save their home and restore benefits, allowing him to return to school and physical therapy.
Since then, Joel has successfully completed a B.S. in Business Management, found employment, and is currently working towards the completion of his Masters in Finance. Realizing this trend among fellow veterans, with a continued desire to serve, Joel founded Helping Veterans as a way to giveback and continue helping fellow Veterans successfully navigate life after military service and find meaningful employment.
"As a veteran, I feel a deep obligation to continue serving my fellow brothers and sisters in arms. My mission, ensure that what happened to our family does not happen to other veterans that have sacrificed so much in fighting to defend this great country"
