I could not be happier to say that I will soon be coming upon my ten month anniversary from the day I got sober, with my one year anniversary in early February. Like many other addicts, I was very skeptical of the treatment process. I didn’t think it was for me or that it would work, and I was scared to death. After a few weeks at Beit T’Shuvah, my entire perception was changed. I learned to trust the process and listen to what people at BTS were saying to me. I can say without a doubt that BTS saved my life. It’s hard to imagine where I was before I came to treatment, but now I try to only look forward.
Many people don’t view addiction as a disease. Some think it’s a choice or that it makes you a bad person. However, having gone through what I have, I can say that it is a horrible disease that leaves you with no choice. BTS taught me how to live with this disease, and not let it rule my life. They taught me that it was not my fault that I have this disease, and that while it is not curable, there are ways to overcome it. My wish is that BTS will be able to grow, treat more people and save more lives.
I am now almost a year sober and am working in the communications office at BTS. I also regularly attend meetings and try to help people as much as I can, whether they have been sober longer than me or are in the same situation I found myself in just a year ago. While I am helping as much as I can, I would still like to be able to give back more to the place that gave me new life.
That is why I’ve decided to run the LA marathon in order to help raise money for Beit T’Shuvah. Every day I see more and more people whose lives are being changed by BTS- not only addicts like me, but their family, friends, coworkers, and people who care about them. My only hope is to see BTS continue to grow and help more people have another chance at life. Anyone who has had any experience with BTS knows that the people there and the program are truly amazing.
