This will be my 12th time running the Boston Marathon and my first time running with the MFNE Team Running For Cover. I am honored and excited to have been chosen to run with and fundraise for this team. For several years now I have had persistent recurring invasive melanoma of my skin secondary to sun damage which fortunately to this point has been nonmetastatic. I have had numerous wide local excisions with a particularly severe one last winter which greatly impacted my training for last April's Boston Marathon and resulted in a very poor run. I'm due another serious excision in the next couple of weeks which hopefully won't have as much impact on my preparation for next April's Boston Marathon as I am further ahead in my training this year and just completed a marathon in Huntsville two weeks ago. It has been quite some time since I had clear margins, and I recently completed another course of imiquimod, the topical chemotherapy agent. All of which led me to applying for the opportunity to be a member of the MFNE Team Running For Cover. In other words I'm a fairly classic example of what all of the MFNE's efforts are trying to prevent.
I have been tremendously impressed with the MFNE and all of their people, activities, and success in the short period of my experience with them. They are truly dedicated, experienced, and hard working in their educating for and carrying out their purpose of preventing this dangerous disease. I sense the same dedication to the cause and determination of the members of the Team Running For Cover.
Although I'm in Tennessee and not in the Boston area I will nonetheless feel a part of the team training runs and events, and perhaps there will be a way that I can actually be present for one of them. I would greatly love to do that and meet MFNE staff and team members prior to marathon weekend itself.
One other thing as it pertains to my desire and determination to stay ahead in this personal battle of mine with melanoma. I fully intend to complete my 25th Boston Marathon and become a member of the quarter century club, and I will be 81 when I can finally accomplish that. I sincerely hope that the MFNE will continue to be a partner with me for the duration of that endeavor.
