We got some bad news today. …
We got some bad news today. The current chemo has stopped working and therefore Mike's tumor is growing and expanding from the right side of his head into the left. Sadly this has greatly interfered with Mike's vision. Mike was sent for an MRI yesterday when problems with his left eye arose. They got the results today which have left them somewhat speechless. Mike's tumor is like an octopus with insidious tentacles wreaking havoc on the optic nerves in his head and taking up space in his sinus towards his brain stem. While the tumor is relatively small any enhancement in its size has dire consequences. So what does all this mean? Mike will start a new chemo drug called Votrient. It is a targeted therapy for sarcomas and is a pill that is taken daily. The side effects are supposed to be pretty bad. Doctors give it a 10-20% chance success rate and on average it has helped patients gain 3-5 more months. That's the average and we know Mike is a fighter. Some people live for years on this drug and we are not giving up hope that Mike will continue to defy the odds. It's with a heavy heart that we communicate this disappointing news today. But we know the Turners are the strongest people we know and won't give up. They have moved in with Mike's family to be around loved ones during this time. Please continue to send notes, emails and texts they love hearing from you.

Labor Day is behind us, sign…
Labor Day is behind us, signaling that summer is coming to an end and the Turners would like to take a moment to look back at the great memories they made.  They were able to spend time with friends and family in MA, VT, RI, and ME.  The summer was full of swimming in the pool and trips to the beach.  In August they celebrated Brennan’s first birthday which was a joyous occasion.  Sadly, they also carry some disappointing news in this update, Mike’s tumor is growing again.  The doctors have jumped to action with a new course of treatment.  Mike will start a new chemo drug on Monday in hopes to stabilize the disease.  He will do two rounds of chemo and then have scans to see the impact of the drug on the cancer.  Doctors have not given them an expected prognosis or success rate.  There is a lot of uncertainty at this time due to the rarity of Mike’s Sarcoma.  Please keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers.  They are trading in their swimsuits for battle gear and are ready to fight this cancer again.

Everyone always asks how to help -- any support you can provide is very much appreciated.  Please share their story and also send texts, emails and notes of support to remind them of good times and make them smile!

Update 5/28/2015:

Great news, the tumor is stable, showing no growth. The oncologists were overjoyed with this outcome. The Turners feel a tremendous amount of relief and look forward to getting back to normal lives and returning to work. Mike will continue to have scans every 3 months. If there are any changes in the tumor, doctors are ready to jump back in with new treatment. The past three months, waiting for this scan, have been stressful and difficult. They are proud as a family to have come this far and appreciate all of their friends who have banded together to help them overcome any obstacles thrown their way. Thank you again for all the support, they hope to enjoy the summer and will update us at the next scan.

Thank you again!

Scan results came in and they were good. Mike is now on a “chemo holiday” and is considered in remission. He has another scan in 3 months to ensure this remains the case and will continue with future scans at this frequency, so if the tumor changes doctors are poised to jump in with more treatment. We are now focusing on getting Mike recovered from the past 6 months of treatment. The Turners feel so strongly that there is power in positive thinking and are so grateful for all the thoughts and prayers that have been sent Mike’s way. This experience has taken a tremendous toll on the family. Kate and Mike would like to thank everyone who has pitched in and supported them. We will keep you updated as things progress. Again there are no words to adequately thank everyone here for your support, it’s so humbling.

Mike finished his 6th treatment on February 14th. The cumulative effects of chemo hit him really hard this last round. Six days after completing chemo Mike was admitted to MGH for 5 days to receive intravenous medication to manage the side effects which included fever, pain, exhaustion, and a compromised immune system. While in the hospital he also received a blood transfusion to help aid his recovery. Mike is home now and on the mend, while healing is a slow process, each day he gets stronger and feels more energized. The Turners are so thankful for everyone’s support. Please continue to keep Mike in your thoughts; he has a scan to confirm the tumor is still stable and a follow up appointment with his oncologist March 9th. We are all hoping that the report will be good. Mike plans to return to work sometime this summer and hopes to see everyone in the near future.

Mike had another scan last week which showed the tumor remains stable (no growth), the oncologist was very pleased about this result. While it isn't news that the tumor is shrinking, it's definitive proof that the treatment is working. The plan going forward is to have the sixth and final treatment Feb 12-14th. Mike is managing the side effects of nausea, pain, and exhaustion, but that won't stop him from rooting for the Patriots this weekend in the Super Bowl!

Thank you again for your continued thoughts and prayers for the Turners.

The Turner family had a nice holiday and were happy to spend time with friends and family enjoying Brennan's first Christmas. Mike was given an extra week off between treatments in order to enjoy the Christmas season, so he is feeling healthy and energized which is a wonderful Christmas present. He goes back in for treatment Wed-Thur this week. Three cycles are behind him so he has just three more to go. Mike and Kate thank you so much for all your continued love and support. They are feeling very optimistic and ready to bring in the new year!!
