In the beginning of 2015, John Concannon was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. John had just finished battling through two consecutive collapsed lungs when the devastating news hit. Since that moment, John has taken this fight head on and has been an exemplar of strength and resilience. With a great team of doctors by his side and the unwavering support of family and friends, John successfully charged through six months of chemotherapy and went into remission in late 2015.
Unfortunately, the cancer has returned. While on a family vacation this past July, John underwent emergency surgery in Panama City where they discovered that the cancer was not only present inside of his intestines, but that it had metastasized. John spent two weeks in the hospital in Florida following the surgery before flying home to St. Louis and immediately being admitted to St. John's hospital and then being transferred to St. Louis University hospital a month later. In total, John spent nearly 2 months in the hospital while he recovered from his emergency surgery, an infection and prepared for chemotherapy.
While John is home from the hospital, his intestines are still not functioning due to the advanced stage of the cancer. He remains on IV nutrition and has still not eaten solid food since early July. John needs the chemotherapy in order to help his intestines fight the cancer so that he can eat food; however none of the many doctors and hospitals his family reached out to would treat him while he is dependent on IV nutrition. It's a terrible catch 22 that has left John with limited options.
Now, after six weeks of searching, we have finally found a hopeful doctor associated with UCLA who is willing to treat John with a managed, low-dose chemotherapy regimen. The plan to get John to Los Angeles ASAP that he can start treatment on Thursday, October 13. This treatment option is the best hope to get John access the treatment he needs, and we are optimistic that he will be successful.
John has so much love in his life. He is a devoted husband to his wife, Adria, and an amazing father to two young boys, Emmett (12) and Elliot (10). He is a loved son of Jane Concannon, the younger brother of three siblings, Jim, Jeff and Julie, and a wonderful uncle, cousin, brother-in-law, friend and co-worker to countless others.
We are so fortunate that family, friends and community have continued to ask what they can do to help and we are grateful for their support. At this time, there are two important things that you can do to help John:
1) Continue to pray for John's healing and send positive thoughts to his family
2) Make a donation to this fund that will help with John's increasing medical & travel expenses
Our goal is to raise $10,000. Please join our effort to help John and his family as he fights for life. Your contribution will go directly to offset travel, lodging and food expenses while John goes to Los Angeles to receive treatment this fall. During this difficult time your prayers, love and support make an enormous impact.
