John's Got CURE-age!!!

THE STORY:

In early 2013 John found a large bulge on his neck. After going to the ENT and his primary care doctor, he was told that it was probably cancer and he needed to consult with an oncologist. From there, John was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He went through 3 cycles of chemotherapy and another two weeks of radiation. The PET scan came back clean following that treatment!!! Within the following months, John was happy and healthy (so we thought). He even completed a 5 mile, 25 obstacle course mud run, called the Savage Race, with me (his wife) in June!

The week after the mud run, he received the startling news that the cancer had returned. The doctor said that this was "completely unexpected" and "nobody would have predicted this"...not things that you want to hear from your oncologist. After all, if you have to have cancer, you want to think that you have the easiest, most predictable form. It has not come back in his neck, but in a couple clumps of lymph nodes in his abdomen.

The treatment this time will be much more intense than the first time. He has already gone through one round of chemotherapy that involved him staying as an inpatient for 4 days. He will go through one or two more rounds of that and then get another PET scan. Following the PET scan he will have a stem cell transplant. This involves him staying in the hospital for 3-4 weeks, having his blood taken out, separate out and "clean" the stem cells, hit him with another round of chemo and then give him back his stem cells. This is all in hopes to rid his body of any lingering cancer cells. Following the transplant, he will have to stay home while he recovers and regains his immune system. Recovery will be intense and will take some time before he is able to getting out an about and then even longer before he is fully recovered.

John had just started a new job before finding out that the cancer came back. Due to this, he'd only accrued 4 days of paid leave/disability. Given that, any time taken off at this point will be completely unpaid. He is going to try to work through the chemo treatments (one week in the hospital, the next two weeks at work) for as long as he can. The four weeks for the stem cell transplant and the recovery, which will be at least a month and a half, will all be unpaid. On top of that he has a high deductible insurance plan that will have to be paid in full in the coming months and then starts over in January.

All that said, because John is a responsible, providing, strong husband and parent of two, any day that he is not strapped to a hospital bed, he will feel the need to push as hard as he can to go to work. This fundraiser is to help decrease the financial stress so that he can focus on beating this ugly monster called cancer! We are deeply appreciative of all of the love, support and prayers of all of our friends and family. We are grateful for any amount donated and thank you for helping us fight cancer!

We love you all and God Bless!
