BENEFITING: JOHN WAYNE CANCER FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: JOHN WAYNE CANCER FOUNDATION
EVENT: Tough Mudder Las Vegas 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 29, 2016
Tough Mudder is a team-oriented 10-12 mile (18-20 km) obstacle course designed to test physical strength and mental grit. Tough Mudder puts camaraderie over finisher rankings and is not a timed race but a team challenge that allows participants to experience exhilarating, yet safe, world-class obstacles they won't find anywhere else.
My personal journey begins with my Grandparents. My Grandma was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and shortly thereafter my Grandpa was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. This didn't affect me very much at the time because - let's face it - Grandparents get old, they get sick, its normal!
But then in 2014, my Mother was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer. In fact, she was diagnosed and then treated before she told us. It was only when they told her she needed to have surgery to remove her thyroid that she felt we - her childeren- should know.
My first emotion was anger. Even now, as I type this, my eyes are welling up with tears. I was angry she took so long to tell me, why wouldn't she want me to know? I was angry that God gave this to her, she is one of the most amazing people I know. I was angry that there was nothing I could to do help her - I was scared.
Our family, together, got through the surgery and helped my Mom through everything she was dealing with the best we could. It definitely brought us closer and made us more aware of the challenges other families dealing with cancer might encounter. We were lucky, my Mom is a fighter and now she is a survivor. My Grandparents - however removed we were from their battle - are strong, healthy survivors. For this I am thankful and I feel blessed.
Now I wouldn't go so far as to say that I understand the feelings every family experiences when dealing with cancer amongst their loved ones, but I can say that I relate. I can say that cancer is awful, I want it removed permanently from this earth, I know we can do it - together. I know it is possible!
I chose the John Wayne Cancer Foundation two years ago in Orange County. I handed out water with them at the OC Marathon. I did it two years in a row and loved the community of volunteers, each with their own story, fighting for the same cause.
Please join me in fighting against cancer. The money we raise goes to real causes, for real research, for real support, for real people. My Mom, my Grandparents, your family, your friends, our neighbors, our community - lets eradicate cancer!
Any donation will help! I will run the 10-12 miles in Vegas with your assistance to exhibit my committment to this cause!
Thank you for your consideration and support!
