EVENT DATE: Aug 01, 2015
Get stoked! It's time for the most adorable surf event of the year. At the 2015 Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog Competition, the most fearless dogs will jump on their boards, paddle out and hang 20!
In 2009 Chance the MarlinDog was sitting in a small room with glass walls and a cold floor. He was emaciated but happy. He was at the mall; but his trip wasn't about shopping. It was about rescue. After being in the system for several weeks he didn't have much time and his paperwork was discouraging. Right there at the top was written a death sentence. In big letters it read PITBULL, which in dog pound world basically means you're on death row. Chance didn't know what a PITBULL was, he just knew that when people looked at him they said PITBULL and walked away. He tried wagging his tail, so much that the hair had rubbed off the end. He tried to keep his head up, but his neck was too weak and his shoulders couldn't handle it. Nobody wanted the sick PITBULL and as the days were passing by more the kind people taking care of him were giving a look that felt, hopeless.
And then one day a man shows up and tells a tale of oceans and adventure! He tells the kind people he wanted a dog to take to California and needed the perfect companion. So as Chance came back from his scheduled walk and saw the man already playing with a dog from across the room, he felt sad. Again because of that PITBULL label the man was going to walk by his room and choose another... Or will he? Maybe if I can get his attention, he'll pick me Chance thought. Chance jumped on the window and tried with all his might to distract the man as he met with the other dog. Chance said pick me, pick me, I want to go to California! I want to be your friend... and then silence... the man stopped and made a comment to the lady. Now she's taking that dog back to its room and walking over to me. Oh wow I'm so nervous I wonder what's gonna to happen next?...
Next has turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime!
Chance and his owner John have travelled, surfed, swam and helped educate people of the true nature of Pitbulls. "Aloha Spirit" is how Chance knows it. After leaving the pound Chance travelled to Pacific Beach California where he and his dad lived in a Surf Camper at the beach. After a couple weeks Chance had enough of just watching the action and went into the ocean himself. (over 15 minutes the first time) After a lengthy training process Chance's love for the ocean was apparent and uncanny. Even in the early days Chance could swim for over a mile and then catch a solid waist high set with energy still left for the beach. He has since travelled the US swimming in lakes, rivers, bayous, and 2 oceans in one week. His favorite places are Tourmaline Surf Park, Taramar, Old Man's SC, and Cochiti Reservoir. His furthest swim to date is around 2 miles, freshwater, 1 1/4 ocean. Biggest wave caught would register at shoulder high, Tandem on a Lifeguard Foamy.
His board preference is a 10'6 SUP or his 8'6 Ocean Kayak. Chance has been board sponsored by Cheap Rentals in Mission Beach, California since the beginning. Leash sponsor thanks to ABCLeash.com of Oceanside.
By highlighting Chance's story and unique ability to swim un-assisted in the water for incredible lengths Chance hopes to promote Positive Pitbull Awareness and to help motivate others to visit their local shelters and adopt today. He also feels very strongly about ocean polution and would like everybody to think about where their trash goes. For Chance his time is just beginning, he's been training for years to show you his skills. Sponsor his upcoming SurfDog accomplishment by donating today. For every donating Chance will send a signed pawtopgragh from this years SurfDog Competition.
Hope to see you in Imperial Beach!
