This fundraiser is to enable us help our friends and volunteers of Big Steps Outreach Network, a youth led organization in Africa committed to reaching out to orphans and vulnerable children, caring, educating and raising funds for their needs including: health, education, shelter, and entertainment in orphanages in Cameroon.
2014 is a year of big impact projects for Big Steps and one of their goals is to reach out to more orphanages especially in rural areas and support them. Recently the team came across one of these and the conditions were so deplorable that it called for urgent action in almost every domain of the orphanage.
Not only are the children unable to have three square meals, but to have the one or sometimes two meals a day, their only guardian has to go out into the village and either beg or do laundry and work on peoples farm so they can afford a day's meal leaving them most of the times by themselves and unattended.
Our friends also realized what they used to call mattresses are now in torn bits and completely worn off because some of the kids are bed-wetting and as a result they contracted skin diseases and were finally forced to sleep on bare springs on the spring beds that they have or put some old dresses on them to enable them sleep.
They have been in the dark with no electricity and water because they owe over a year’s bills of electricity and water and so have been disconnected completely. They struggle just to get clean and portable water and the few who can go to school struggle with getting their homework done with bush lamps and candles.
Those who even manage to go to school are constantly sent away from school for one reason or another, ranging from the lack of text books, school fees or even the right school uniform, which combined might not cost up to $50 per pupil for per academic year.
They have an extremely limited wardrobe to choose from and on the first day the big steps friends visited what they had on as their guest cloths was what some won't even use as floor rags as they all looked, torn shabby and unkempt in them. Our hearts bled when we saw the pictures from this orphanage posted by our friends on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/BigStepsOutreachNetwork)
We believe No child should be allowed to grow up in such bare conditions, not when the only crime they committed was to have lost their parents to the cruel hands of death. The children in the "Armour Du Prochain orphanage" deserve better and we can help them experience life and growing up in a way any other child would.
We cannot go there to clean and cook and play with the kids as our friends at Big Steps are doing but we can all do something to help from where ever we are! We might not be able to change the world but we can change the lives of a few people one step at a time, so why not start with these children?
Your contribution will go a long way to help them realize they did not commit any crime by being orphans and that to have a decent meal is a right and not a privilege!
They will realize that they are like any other child and to have clean and new cloths is not a luxury but a necessity to grow healthy and happy!
They will realize that to be educated and have the right tools to do so is not a privilege but a basic and fundamental children’s right!
They will realize sleeping on proper beds with mattresses and some clean sheets, is not extravagance but to name the least the most basic need of a child!
They will realize one of the most inalienable rights of theirs as children is the right to play and they will be able to do so thanks to you!
They will realize the right to clean and portable water should not be farfetched when it comes to their case and that to study with electricity is not a luxury but a prerequisite.
Together we can make this happen! Every donation counts and it begins with you!
