BENEFITING: LIVE FOR TODAY FOUNDATION INC
Jolie is an adventurous, fun-loving, and active young woman who loves to express herself through art, photography, veganism, and outdoor activities. As a seemingly healthy 21-year-old, she injured a rib while surfing. A subsequent chest x-ray brought much worse news than a rib-injury; she had several tumors in her chest and near her heart. It was cancer – specifically, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a white blood cell cancer that commonly affects young adults.
“Having cancer made me feel extremely alienated. I attempted to date a few people but it was always awkward, and I felt like I was experiencing everything so much more intensely than the people around me. When I left my apartment, I wanted people to see me as a person rather than a cancer patient, so I always wore a wig and makeup to appear normal.” – Jolie
After several months of chemotherapy, Jolie was done with treatment and ready to move on with her life. Unfortunately, the celebration was cut short. A PET scan showed several new active tumors. Her cancer was not gone. Within days, she had to leave her life in Jacksonville behind and move home to Virginia with her parents. Thankfully, after several more cycles of chemo, Jolie went into remission.
“Returning to a normal routine was extremely strange after fighting cancer for a year. I would never want cancer, but the experience has changed me in ways that I wouldn’t take back for anything... Live For Today not only provided me with a group of peers who were actually tuned in to what I was dealing with when I was sick, but now that I am in remission the group is supporting me in the ways I have grown. I can’t wait to travel on my life adventure - but this time, with my high school sweetheart beside me.” - Jolie
