In February 2012 my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer that had metastized to her spine and liver. The disease came seemingly out of nowhere. Mom was never a smoker, didn't work in a high risk industry and hadn't shown any signs of serious illness. But when a "pulled muscle" grew increasingly painful she went to the doctor and received the shock of her life. She hadn't pulled a muscle. Her spine was disintegrating - the bones forced apart by painful lesions from the inside out.
Since February mom has demonstrated amazing courage and grace, enduring treatments that would have put a normal person under the table - and beating the odds by surviving past the 6 to 9 month prognosis she was given. The doctors told us from the begining that there was no hope of a cure - we simply caught it too late.
But you know what? Fuck cancer.
The more we know, the more we can fight this bitch of a disease. For example, I didn't know until this year that there is no way to diagnose my mom's type of lung cancer until it metastizes (spreads to other organs). WTF is that about? We need more research and we need more awareness about lung cancer. And for all of the cancers out there that can be diagnosed early, we need people to know the signs and get help.
No more turning a blind eye. No more blissful ignorance. Cancer thrives on willful ignorance, so fuck that. Fuck cancer.
I'm asking for your help today, in my mom's name and the countless others who struggle with this disease every day. My goal is to raise $500 and help (in a small way) Fuck Cancer get to their overall goal of $50K.
Here's how you can help:
1. Donate. Help Fuck Cancer spread the word about early detection.
2. Get schooled on cancer here.
3. Tell the world about Fuck Cancer. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell anyone that's willing to listen.
Early detection is the only cure that we have.
