JBLC 2016 Tunnel To Towers Event
This is an OPEN INVITATION to all members, their families, and friends to join the Jones Beach Lifeguards Team and participate in the 2016 Tunnel to Towers 5k Run/Jog/Walk to be held on Sunday September 25th. This event, which draws more than 25,000 people, is conducted each year in honor of New York Fireman Stephen Siller and all those who perished on 9/11. Since then this event has grown to become a major nationwide initiative to provide financial assistance to Building for America’s Bravest (Building “Smart Homes” for wounded Veterans). The route retraces NY Fireman Stephen Siller run to the World Trade Center through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and finishes at the shadow of the Freedom Tower where there is music, food and a block party experience you’ll never forget.
To register for the event you need to go online to www.crowdrise.com/t2tnyc and follow the instructions. First, you should click on the registration icon so that you can officially register for the event. All information related to the event (history, route, directions other links, etc) will be found on this site. Second, once you complete registering you should go back to the original site as indicated above and click on the icon that reads “Join a fundraising Team”. In the tool bar that is displayed type in Jones Beach Lifeguards and click on the search icon. You will then be on the JBLC fundraising page. Should you wish to donate to the Tunnel to Towers fundraising effort ($10 minimum) your donation will be registered and your name will officially appear on the team list.
Lastly, a group fund raising event will be scheduled for Saturday evening, September 17th at the Scuttlebutt Tavern in Wantagh from 6 - 9 pm. During the evening commemorative JBLC TUNNEL TO TOWERS T-SHIRTS will be sold for $20 (these shirts will be worn at the run to show our solidarity for the cause) and food and drinks will also be available for purchase. We will also have a 50/50 raffle to further our fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the tunnel to Towers foundation in the name of the Jones Beach Lifeguards. While we will never forget our brothers who were lost on 9/11 we also want this event to be dedicated each year to a member of the Corps who has passed on since then. In 2014, we honored the memory of Brother Chad T. Lundwall JBLC/FDNY. Last year, we honored JBLC Brother, 1st Lt. Matthew D. Lynch USMC. This year, for the 2016 Tunnel to Towers run the Jones Beach Lifeguards will participate in honor of JBLC Brother Bruce Petersen. Bruce was an active member of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. 1975 - 2012. Throughout his career, Bruce “Big Boy” Petersen held may caps. He always put his brother lifeguards and family first. In April of 2013 Bruce succumbed to melanoma cancer. We as a crew are honoring his life, career and accomplishments by running the Tunnel to Towers in his name. His name will appear on our Jones Beach T2T race shirt along with the others we have honored on this day. We will never forget!
Come join us, let’s demonstrate our compassion for those who were lost, assist those who have defended our way of life, and participate together in the tradition of the JONES BEACH LIFEGUARD CORPS. LAST YEAR WE HAD OVER 50 PEOPLE PARTICIPATE AND AGAIN RAISED OVER $3000…. COME DOWN AND JOIN US AGAIN THIS YEAR AND BRING SOMEONE NEW!
out the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. Building for America’s Bravest, a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. In January 2015, the Foundation also raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for the families of slain NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Luis Ramos.
The mission of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. We also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
Please email NYC@tunnel2towers.org for answers to any other questions that we may not have addressed.
We will continue to update event details so please check back!
