BENEFITING: Saha Global
EVENT DATE: Dec 10, 2012
This winter, I am going to the area of Tamale, Ghana, as a fellow with Community Water Solutions. My team and I will work with a village in the area to implement and monitor a small water business, providing clean water to the community!
On the ground, my team will first trained in water quality testing, and the CWS water treatment methods. We will then spend two and half weeks in the field implementing and monitoring a CWS water business in our village. By the end of the 3 week program, we will have provided a permanent source of safe drinking water for an entire community (approx. 500-1,000 people)! The funds raised will go directly to the capital necessary to establish the water treatment business in our community.
Community Water Solutions (CWS) is a non-profit organization that works to bring clean drinking water to rural villages in West Africa by establishing sustainable water treatment businesses. As a social enterprise, the CWS-implemented businesses are owned and operated by the communities that they serve, and use simple, affordable technologies to enable the treatment, distribution and storage of clean, safe drinking water. The maintenance and operation of these water treatment businesses is funded by revenue from the sale of drinking water, while the capital necessary to establish them is generated from CWS’ fellowship program and CWS fundraising activities.
The CWS Fellowship Program is a three-week water education and leadership training experience in Northern Region Ghana. The purpose of the program is to teach individuals about the global water crisis, and inspire them to become leaders in the field of international development.
