Kirsten and I are looking at the traditional wedding gifts little different. We would like you to donate whatever you would have spent on a wedding gift to a cause we feel passionate about. Big City Mountaineers represents many things we share a passion for: Youth mentoring, Environmental stewardship, Outdoor recreation, Leadership.
I was fortunate enough to volunteer with BCM as a mentor to underserved youth on two different occasions. These are kids that had never seen a deer, slept in a tent, or even been in the woods overnight. One of the kids had a parent in prison and another was couch surfing between friends because he had no permanent home. We outfitted them with all the gear they would need for week in the woods and taught them how to use every piece. Each trip we backpacked for a week through Olympic National Park while teaching Leave No Trace principals, team building, leadership, and how to poop in the woods. Each kid had their own challenges to overcome and I feel fortunate that I could be a part of their personal growth while sharing my own experiences.
This very much reminds me of of my own Outward Bound experience when I was 15 years old and I'm glad I could I could pay that forward to another generation of youth.
Kirsten and I have all the dishes and flatware we need. It would mean so much more to both of us if you would donate whatever money you would have spent on material things to help send another very deserving kid on a week long self discovery trip into nature. The natural world touches people in ways that cannot be quantified.
