Reece, 8 metabolic disorder I wish to go to Disney Aulani Reece was born on January 8, 2007, and lives in Rancho Cordova with his parents, Matthew and Kelly. When Reece was only 14 months-old, his parents began to suspect that something was medically wrong with him. He was developmentally delayed and when he began to crawl, Matthew and Kelly noticed that his legs would jerk and move around. They brought Reece to the emergency room, but at that point the movements had stopped and there were no visible symptoms for a doctor to evaluate. In an attempt to understand Reece’s condition, the doctor advised Matthew and Kelly to video record the next episode of involuntary movements. This process continued with several different doctors until January 2015, when Reece’s parents finally received an answer as to what had been ailing their son for years. Reece suffers from Glucose Transporter Type 1 Deficiency Syndrome, a lifelong condition in which his body cannot process sugar, and one for which there is currently no cure. Reece’s symptoms are eased with the help of a strict Ketone diet. On this high-fat, adequate-protein and low-carbohydrate diet, the body is forced to burn fats rather than carbohydrates, and fat is turned into ketone bodies that replace glucose as an energy source for the brain. The elevated level of ketone bodies in Reece’s blood reduces the frequency of seizures. Reece loves the colors yellow and red, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Pixar movies. He is a fan of Lilo and Stitch, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Captain Underpants books, and Super Mario. Reece also enjoys studying math, playing baseball, and watching “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” For his wish, Reece’s top three choices would be to visit Disney Aulani, to meet Buster Posey, or to be a chef. Reece is a big Disney fan, and would love the chance to visit Hawaii, the home of his favorite character, Stitch. When dreaming of a wish to go to Aulani, Reece imagines floating in the lazy river, hula hooping with Stitch, and snorkeling with the fish. Reece said his second choice of a wish would be to meet his idol, Buster Posey. Reece would be thrilled to spend some time with one of the star players of the San Francisco Giants. Finally, Reece’s third choice of wish is to be a chef. His father is a chef, and Reece thinks it would be awesome to be just like his dad for a day. Dreaming about what his wish might be has given Reece and his family a reason to smile.
