The prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. Today 25 million Americans have diabetes, and almost 80 million more are at risk for the disease. There are 366 million people in the world with diabetes and this number is likely to double in the next 15 years.
Joslin Diabetes Center, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is a unique institution dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes. As Chief Medical Officer of Joslin, I understand well the challenges that people with diabetes face 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and am committed to doing what I can to help everyone with diabetes live healthy normal lives - something which is certainly possible today. I also know that in addition to providing the best education and care to people with diabetes, we must do everything we can to prevent and cure this disease and our researchers are working tirelessly to achieve this. Joslin is unquestionably the best center in the world that can accomplish all of these goals.
I am running the Boston marathon to help raise funds for Joslin so that we can achieve our vision of a world without diabetes and its complications and our mission of preventing, treating and curing this disorder. Please help me help Joslin achieve these goals.
