THE STORY:

Our daughter Kycie Jai Terry was 5 years old when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on January 30th, 2015 with a blood sugar over 1,100.  That same day she was LifeFighted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Before reaching the hospital Kycie suffered two seizures and fell unconcious.  An MRI was ordered and doctors told my wife (Jamie) and I that the scan showed extensive damage to critical areas of Kycie's brain.  Most kids do not survive an injury like this, and those that do have little to no quality of life.  As parents, we were devastated and spent the next 8 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit praying and encouraging Kycie to fight.  We vowed that as long as she fights, we will fight with her.

Over the next few days Kycie surprised everyone and was able to breath without the help of a ventilator and did not need a tracheotomy.  She was moved to the Neuro and Trauma Unit to begin a long and painful recovery.  We live in St. George, Utah which is located 310 mile south of Primary Children's Hospital.  Jamie and I decided from the beginning that we would never leave Kycie alone.  I would drive to the hospital every weekend and back to southern Utah during the work week while Jamie stayed by Kycie's side.

Overwhelmed with the new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, its unpredictable sugar swings, shots and glucose checks, we were also dealing with the even more daunting fact that our little princess now has a severe traumatic brain injury.  Kycie would open her eyes for short periods of time, but would make little purposeful movement.  Jamie worked night and day nursing Kycie back to health while fighting feelings of guilt for leaving her 5 boys at home.

Kycie spent a total of 111 straight days at Primary Children's Hosptial progressing and inspiring tens of thousands of people around the world through a Facebook page called Kisses For Kycie and Instagram @kisses4kycie.  She returned to her home in St. George on May 14, 2015.  She continued to progress at home with her 5 brothers and with the help of her parents.  We were still anxiously awaiting her first words for the second time when Kycie unexpectedly passed away on July 11th, 2015.

I have never run a marathon, in fact, I have never run much more than a 5K.  I am running the Boston Marathon with the help of Joslin Diabetes Center in the memory of my little girl.  I am running to help find a cure so no parent has to go through what we have gone through.  I will finish and fight like Kycie did!
