THE STORY:

On November 6th, I’ll be running the NYC Marathon as part of Team Joslin. I was diagnosed at age four as a type one diabetic and for the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of being a patient at this amazing diabetes treatment and research hospital.

When I moved to Boston for college, my parents were as excited about the world-class medical care I’d be receiving in my new home as they were about my new educational endeavors. At the time, I thought they were overreacting, but today I know I owe a great deal of my current health and well-being to the unmatched care I’ve received here over the past +10 years.

Most noteably, In the week leading up to winter break during my senior year of college, my insulin pump malfunctioned and left me in the ICU. When I should have been cramming for exams and wrapping presents, I was hooked up to an IV. I’m forever grateful for the care the team at Joslin gave me that week – they nursed me back to health and even got me home in time to spend the holidays with my family.

Since that time, my doctor has done an incredible job of providing me with the proper tools to improve my health. Whenever I have an excuse for why I’m not doing what we talked about working on during the last visit, he has had an even better tool of empowerment enabling me to turn it around for next time.

I know its now its now more important than ever these medical advancements are able to continue. And if anyone is going to accomplish this far-fetched task – I’m fully confident it’s going to be a result of the patient therapies and scientific discoveries that have started at Joslin. In November, the funds raised by Team Joslin support the High Hopes fund. This fund helps ensure Joslin’s capacity to prevent, treat and cure diabetes through cutting-edge research, comprehensive patient care and pioneering education programs.

A Big Thank You

Thank you a thousand times over to my parents, who never let this disease stop myself or my siblings (3 of whom are also type one diabetics) from tackling anything. Thank you to my siblings, for making life normal when we should have all been a minority. Thank you to Adam, for kicking me out of the house, rain or shine, to get my miles in. Thank you to my family and friends, for supporting me no matter what and for putting up with me when my sugar is low and I’m especially cranky. Thank you also to my dear friend Fred, for encouraging everyone around you to see the good in any situation and always putting the impossible within reach.
