THE STORY:

I am honored to be selected to run for Team Joslin at the 2016 New York City Marathon.

As all of my friends and family know, I am a Type 1 diabetic, diagnosed on February 1st, 1988 at the age of 17. From that time forward I have lived with this disease but I also have made it my goal to contribute to better understanding this disease and hopefully finding a cure. I majored in biochemistry in my undergraduate university program, went to graduate school and received my Masters of Science in Biochemistry with a research thesis studying the effects of nitric oxide on specific proteins in diabetic patients and particularly how that impacted platelets and hyperaggretation in diabetic patients. I also volunteered in two separate clinical research trials at Mt. Sinai hospital in Toronto.

A couple of years ago I decided to get off the couch and make some improvements in my life. I decided to run as the health benefits to me and the ability to manage my disease better were very clear. I have moved over to the Tandem T-Slim insulin pump a couple of years ago and about a year ago I began using the Dexcom CGM which is of particular importance when I am running long distances by myself and monitoring my blood glucose levels while running. During that time I have progressed from hiding on the treadmill, to my first 5K race (September 2014), my first 10K race (March 2015) and then my first half marathon (September 2015). Not only are the health benefits great for me and my management of diabetes but I also found I was good at this! I routinely finish in the top 5-10% of all participants of all my races!

When I set out to run my first half marathon in 2015 that was a huge mental hurdle to me. And as I was gearing up to run the race, I wrote a long diatribe meant to inspire as many as I could. I know too many diabetic children of my friends and family. But not just diabetics, I also wanted to inspire my children, my friends and family, and anyone else who could use me as an example to break through the barriers that we all put in front of ourselves. There is nothing we can't achieve with the right effort and attidude!!

So now I am faced with my next hurdle. One that I have long considered insurmountable. One that I have held with the view of impossible for me since the day I was diagnosed. I have never run a full marathon and never thought that I could. I am going to break through that barrier. I am going to do this and it is going to be one of the most rewarding personal experiences of my life and I hope my story serves to inspire as many people who read about or hear about me.

I am honored to run to support Joslin, the work they do, and I hope that I make everyone proud as I work to achieve this next milestone. I hope you will join me in supporting this organization in this fundraiser.
