Journey of the Heart: TEAM JB
Organized by: Becca Johnson
Day One and $150!
May 04, 2016
Our young friend, Jerry Bruce Hennon was very recently put on the heart transplant list. Jerry Bruce's myTEAM TRIUMPH Angels of Georgia racing family (not the organization itself) is raising money to give JB and his family some much needed distraction, parental respite and helping build more and more memories for the entire family. We are attempting to give JB special outings (as many as we can and he can handle) like to local restaurants, the zoo, mom and dad a bed and breakfast locally, the Atlanta (or Tennesse) Aquarium...just all the things that will help this little guy and his family make these amazing memories and provide an outlet for normal fun activities that he can partake in without leaving his general area. Whatever is left over, we'd like to present to them as help with any extraneous travel expenses to and from the hospital or for other needs while their son is waiting, going through and recovering from surgery etc. Hospitalizations take their toll on not only the child but the family, both emotionally, physically and financially.
Jerry Bruce Hennon is 10 years old. At 10, you should be worrying about your next day of school, playing baseball or at the park. At 10 years old, you should be focusing on school work (and soon Summer!) and just being a kid. Your Mom and Dad, sisters and brothers should be doing anything but worrying about if their child or sibling will see next summer or if they'll be in the hospital during the holidays or birthdays, whether a common cold will put their loved one in the hospital, if their child is okay or if their child can or cannot do something because of the toll it's taking on their child's body, heart and mind. You see, Jerry Bruce has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or otherwise known as HLHS. Mom explains HLHS very simply.
Here is a little snippet on JB we asked his mom to write (we're really trying to get the Atlanta Braves to visit with JB, too...because he's the biggest fan EVER). FROM JB's mom: JB is 10 years old. He was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). This is a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. There is no known cause for HLHS, nor is there a cure. Without intervention, HLHS is fatal. At 3 days old, JB has the Norwood procedure. At 5 months old, he had the Glenn and at 15 months he had the Fontal procedure. The Fontan tends to cause high pressures in the heart and is damaging his liver. To avoid double organ transplants , he was recently listed on the heart transplant list. Now, he is waiting for a new heart and continuing to stay positive. JB has had a typical childhood ( other than all 3 open heart surgeries) consisting of meeting developmental milestones, going to preschool and is now in the 4th grade. He loves being with his family and friends. He also is a big hit in the running community thanks to My Team Triumph. He has run multiple races with his longest race being the Publix Half Marathon. He also loves baseball and thanks to our community for building a Miracle Field ( let's special needs children have safe, flat rubberized field that are wheelchair friendly ) he has played for the Braves every season. He once attended a Fantasy camp with the Atlanta Braves. When they asked if anyone knew any Braves, he raised his hand and said he played for them! JB is always smiling and in my eyes, is a true hero!
JB needs his family to be able to concentrate on him and not worry about money or other issues that tend to plague families of children with special needs and specifically him. Please consider giving the gift of respite to Jerry Bruce and his family. After all, this is what we are trying to accomplish: Memories, distraction, fun, easing in any small way we can their financial burden. They don't ask for anything so we're asking for them. Thank you so much! TEAM JB
