Journey to Okinawa: Help Kids Visit the Birthplace of Karate
Organized by: Warrior Origins
EVENT DATE Aug 01, 2016
Focus, discipline, confidence, strength, respect . . . these are just some of the positive qualities that children develop through the martial arts. Too often society doesn't provide opportunities to children until they are on the wrong path. This is an opportunity for you to help lift up children who are making good decisions and doing their best! Warrior Origins is a nonprofit organization founded to support enrichment opportunities for dedicated martial arts students.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Please help us send deserving karate students from Washington, D.C. to Okinawa, Japan this summer! Every dollar counts. Accompanied by their teacher, Sensei Patrick Burton, these accomplished students, ages 10-14, have all spent years in training to earn upper level belts, and they now have an opportunity to train at the International Karate Study Centre located in Yomitan, Okinawa. They succeed personally and academically, and assist younger students while continuing to improve their own skills.
WHERE DOES MY DONATION GO?
All donations are tax deductible. If you give us your mailing address, all contributors who donate at least $20 will receive a thank you postcard all the way from Okinawa!
Why $16,410? To ensure no student who has worked hard is denied opportunity due to family financial constraints, our ALL VOLUNTEER Board (we have no paid staff) raises money to help decrease the individual cost burden of participation for students and chaperones. Our goal is to raise enough funds so we can provide travel scholarships that match family contributions 2:1. 100% of your donation goes directly to cover travel expenses and cultural experiences while abroad.
WHO AM I HELPING?
Warrior Origins partners with the Young Warriors Karate & Self Defense Program in Washington, D.C. to identify students eligible to participate in activities that will deepen their appreciation of martial arts, including cultural field trips and competitive tournaments. Because karate is more than a sport - it's a way of life - Warrior Origins also encourages global citizenship by organizing opportunities for international travel to the birth places of modern martial arts. Students participate in karate training at the Hill Center in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., onsite at Two Rivers Public Charter School, and onsite at Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School. Sensei Patrick has led the Young Warriors Program since 2010. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Sensei Patrick is a veteran Army Ranger with almost 30 years of martial arts experience.
Thanks so much for your support!
