EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
On April 17,2017 I will be running the Boston Marathon with Journey Forward in honor of my Uncle Pete and those with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
For those of you that don't know, Journey Forward is dedicated to bettering the lives of those who have suffered a Spinal Cord Injury through an intense exercise program. Exercise is important to everyone and even more so to those who have suffered a Spinal Cord Injury.
An average able bodied person can walk around throughout the day; and that simple task of walking puts needed stress on the body to insure proper bone density, muscle growth, and many other bodily functions. When an individual suffers a spinal cord injury and are required to sit in a wheelchair all day, they are no longer able to obtain the benefits that come from the average activities of daily living.
Journey Forward is giving those with SCI's a chance. A chance that, sadly, a lot of other people don't seem to think is needed. We tend to look at those with SCI's and see them as they are and think that's it for them. The staff at Journey Forward choose to see a healthier life in the chair, or life beyond it.
These people didn't ask for this injury. Yet in order for them to have a chance at their old life, with the best equipment, they have to pay at least $100.00/hr. Insurance companies won't cover any of these costs for the member's time at JF. For some reason a "freak accident" doesn't make the cut. JF is trying everything they can to keep costs as low as possible, but it's still a lot.
This is where we come in. When deciding whether or not to donate to this cause, I'd like you to think of the amount of times you slipped and fell but got back up. Maybe you play hockey and you've fallen and hit your head. You skated back to your bench, right? Or when you go to the beach on a hot day and you jump in the ocean and ride the waves back into shore. You cooled off, and went back up to your towel and continued your day with friends, right?
These are just some examples of every day things we do, but for some members of Journey Forward, they weren't as lucky to walk, swim, or skate off. They had freak accidents that have now altered their lives.
It could have been any of us.
So what would you want if you were in their situation? I know that I would want a chance. A chance to keep my health while in a chair, or maybe one day walk out of Journey Forward knowing I’ve beat the odds.
Whether you donate $25 or $100, you’re giving them a chance and the support to know that we believe they can beat those odds. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
Thank you for your support and I am excited to represent all of these strong men and women as I cross the finish like on April 17th!
