Please help me help support others who have been stricken with SCI (Spinal Cord Injury). Here is my personal story and how I became involved.
This past Labor Day Weekend my stepdaughter Sarah’s boyfriend Sam injured his spinal cord while swimming at Lake Winnisquam, NH. That accident left Sam wheelchair bound, for now. Sam has been through quite an ordeal since that day in September, having most recently spent time at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown where he has been undertaking an intense regimen of physical and occupational therapy. He is now attending outpatient therapy and is getting ready for the next phase of his recovery.
During these past few months, I have spent a lot of time researching, reading and learning about SCI and during my research discovered an incredible non-profit organization in Canton, MA called Journey Forward that specializes in recovery through an intense exercise program. Please visit their website http://www.journey-forward.org and “like” their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Journey-Forward/61829284081 and read about this extraordinary organization.
Journey Forward is approved as a charity organization for the 118th running of the Boston Marathon being held on Monday, April 21, 2014. As you may or may not know, I have run in 8 previous marathons, including 3 Boston Marathons. The last marathon I ran was back in the fall of 2005 and, at the time, I thought it would be my last one ever, but the set of circumstances that occurred on Labor Day Weekend re-ignited a passion in me that I thought was long since extinguished.
I reached out to Journey Forward to inquire as to whether or not there were any spaces left in their allotment of charity openings. I was informed they were given 3 bibs and only 1 remained. I applied and am extremely excited to have been chosen for their final slot.
Now begins the long and arduous task of training for a marathon, not as easy as it was 8 years ago! The training is only one part of the process. The other part requires your help. In order to be selected as a charity runner you need to raise $7,500 to support the charity you are running for. I am therefore asking for charity donations to help support this very worthy cause and one that means so much to me on a personal level.
