BENEFITING: ORPHAN JUSTICE CENTER
We are raising funds to send 6 boys from single mother families with 6 mentors for a five-day backpacking trip into the wilderness for a time of relationship-building and adventure. We are a mentoring program of the Orphan Justice Center called "Adventures For the Magnanimous" (AFM) which exists to connect mentors with at-risk youth in positive group activities and one-on-one mentoring relationships.
Starting officially in September of 2011, our team of volunteer mentors of AFM from my church community and I have made a decision to start building positive relationships with boys who are in at-risk situations (ages 12-17). At this point, the fact is all of the boys we connect with do not an active father in their lives. Our desire is that every boy without a father in our community could have an intentional, consistent mentoring relationship with one of our screened and approved male mentors.
Our strategy to achieve this is that through creating bi-monthly events which foster relationship-building. Men who want to volunteer for these activites have a great way to meet at-risk boys and begin real friendships which can lead to more consistent one-on-one mentoring.
The reason for this backpacking event is to provide a context for the enrichment of these mentoring relationships through an adventure taken together. Not only will the relationships become stronger, but each individual will be able to grow in their leadership capabilites, problem-solving skills and have a greater understanding and appreciation of nature in our beautiful country.
Thank you for considering investing into the lives of these amazing boys.
