BENEFITING: THE FELIX ORGANIZATION - ADOPTEES FOR CHILDREN
EVENT: Dance This Way 2017
Joy Heslinga wrote -On May, 7, 2017 I will have the privilege of joining the Felix Organization at their signature fundraising event, Dance This Way, a non-stop dance party that has attendees dancing through the decades to raise money for the NYC community of foster kids and their families. Founded in 2006 by two adoptees who felt fortunate for having been taken in by loving families, The Felix Organization’s goal is to change the life of a child in foster care. Camp Felix, The Felix Organization’s main initiative, is a summer camp established to provide foster kids an opportunity to leave behind their difficult circumstances, gain independence, make new friends, and explore the natural world. Jasmine Vann is a shining example of a Camp Felix alumnus. She was a camper, counselor in training, volunteer, and plans to be a counselor when she turns 18. Felix’s ‘Beyond Camp’ program enabled Jasmine to take a Creative Writing Workshop. In her own words, Jasmine wrote, “I’m already hard on myself but, I will continue to do what I do because at the end of the day for a sixteen-year-old, I know I am excelling. I mean look at me I know I have a job and I’m claiming some type of independence.” Encouraging independence, through a model of teaching respect for oneself and others has helped Felix connect with campers such as Jasmine and propel them to achieve beyond what they previously felt possible. At this year’s Dance This Way event, The Felix Organization continues to encourage these young dreamers by awarding two former Camp Felix campers with the Dreammaker Award, given to youth who embody the Felix spirit. Please help me support this wonderful group of future dreammakers by making a contribution to my team! Every dollar can make a difference. Thank you in advance.
