Khadijat here, your favorite urban nomad w/ #jetsetterproblems! I’m pleased to announce that I have been selected as a finalist in Atlantic Impact’s Study Abroad for A Cause Blogger Challenge which allows me the opportunity to fulfill one of my deepest passions which is to empower young people to travel abroad at least once in their lives as a means of self-discovery.
Atlantic Impact is a great non-profit initiative that affords the chance for low-income, at-risk high school students from some of the grittiest inner-city neighborhoods in Detroit to travel abroad in order to learn the history of their roots, restore their self-worth in the world and help them begin to envision that their dreams and aspirations are both relevant and possible to attain. Last year's trip took Atlantic Impact students to London and this year's will be to Barbados.
This Study Abroad for a Cause initiative is a project that is very close to my heart as I grew up as an urban youth in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn surrounded by many who had and still have never owned a passport in their lives and did not believe that there was a world of acceptance outside of their five-block radius of experiences. It is my wish to not only visibly show these kids a living testament that anything is possible through sharing my personal story but more importantly, I would love to do this by having the great opportunity of being selected to go to Barbados and document the Atlantic Impact kids' first journey out of the country as a lasting example/memory for them to actively recall what can be achieved with a full understanding of one’s value.
Help me tell the wonderful story of these young, Detroit high school students by donating whatever you can today towards my efforts to support and get the chance to travel alongside these kids as they move along their journeys towards self-discovery and actualization of their short & long term dreams.
Atlantic Impact is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations made are tax-deductible. The deadline to receive donations is Monday, June 9th by 11:59 PM EST!
