J's Pursuit of Opportunity
Organized by: Johnathan Potts
It all started when I traveled to South America the summer of 2013, thanks to the awesome Frances L. Phillips Travel Scholarship from my university, UNC-Chapel Hill. I returned to the States and immediately started planning to study abroad in India for my final semester, with the intention of staying abroad, of travel afterwards. I knew I’d have no money and would have to figure that out, taking it as an opportunity to explore the idea of “community".
I come from a space placed between two small towns in Robeson County, a community of First Americans, “a place where we are everything.” My forays into Anthropology and Global Studies nurtured a desire to better understand community and communication, especially community. In my studies, questions of sustainability were ever present and I’ve developed several pursuits of mine own; to explore co-dependence, self-liberalization, localization, food…
I wish to explore these movements, these ideas, with the knowledge that what I learn through experience cannot be replicated back home but used as an example. Just like writing. Another interest, grappling with my instinct and logic to communicate and explore thought. By pen. Bi-pedal. I pace a lot. These interests of mine are my sights to see, and since I am attempting to do all of this by word of mouth, I never have a plan. Just ideas.
Ultimately, you are giving me money to just do my own thang… As you can tell, I’m good at selling myself. Most of the money with go to food; believe you me, ya gurl love to eat. To accommodation. Coffee of course. Networking (that’s the part where I have a beer).
I left India in late July and spent 4 months in Thailand working, exploring, and awaiting opportunities; to learn of a place to farm, build stuff, act as an event planner, pose nude for an art class, whatever. After 4 months I began to establish some awesome relationships and branch out my contacts, and as my visa came to an end a friend of a friend sent me here: to Cambodia. Currently, I’m working with one fella on a project of his own. It’s crazy because we met three months ago and talked about our mutual interests and his previous ventures, only for him to disappear after suddenly becoming ill. So now, over three months later, I met him here in town and am joining him for a bit. Unfortunately he’s not able to offer me accommodation.
I’ve become really interested in letter writing and reading texts aloud, exclusively. Writing is my primary goal at the moment, so I hope to eventually be in a space that inspires that side of me. This exploration itself is incentive to write and explore my own style so I never lack material, but if you would like to receive a letter, donation or not, please send me an email and include your address.
Thanks you for donating and sharing!
