Hello my name is "Johnny". I am a veteran of the Vietnam war and Gulf crisis where I became disabled in service to our country.
Finding ourselves (my family) in a serious situation, specifically related to the housing problem, has subjected not only myself but so many other service members, men, women and families, to needless depravation and humiliation upon coming home after conflicts and facing hard economic times!
In our case we rented a home that was to be sold by the owner. It needed to be rennovated which caused us to vacate and find another rental. We found one that accepted the HUD-VA housing voucher that we were eligible for. At the last minute the VA caseworker was told just before our planned transistion that we could not use it outside the county it was issued from. That action caused us to become totally homeless and we have been looking for a home ever since then that would accomodate us.
Additionally, our daily living conditions of being displaced and homeless keeps most of us who are willing to work in spite of our disabilities to gain employment.
We are denied the basics of life such as having a place to lay our weary head in a home through some of the programs that are available from the different veterans programs and in the private sector .
Unfortunately the complicated formula's used by these programs to figure these things out are so boggled with red tape and time consuming and honestly that is what pushes us to the streets and into homless conditions we and others are currently in!
This breaks my heart to not only be in this position but not being able to help others who seriously devoted their lives in service so that the freedoms we have in this great country can remain.
I do everything I can to volunteer at our local food pantry to gain food for my family and service dog's and anything leftover from the pantry helps me help other displaced individuals and families at our local veterans center and other organizations.
My heart longs to start a foundation to begin addressing the bigger issues that plunges veterans and civilians into the depths of poverty and despair.
This concerns the entire homeless veteran population and it affects veterans of all combat eras including our dependents. Many of us are combat-decorated .
I would love to open a large facilty on some property with showers and a kitchen to give the basic hygiene and hot meals as well as a shelter for those like myself who are currently in these deplorable conditions.
I truly believe we can make a difference if we all stand together and solve some of these policy issues that keep all of us from accomplishing the American dream after returning home. Whatever that looks like today I'm not quite sure but I know we all have one!
We appreciate that we at least have an RV to use temporarily that we have resided in for a year now. And we are most appreciative and blessed by the Lord who continues to watch over us. If we could move into a 1 or 2 bedroom home with a small yard for our pups that would truly be a blessing.
With your help and support we can get my family the help we need .
I would be grateful of any and all contributions received on mine and my family's behalf and thank you in advance for your support.
Respectfully and with great appreciation,
