I've been following Haymaker's for Hope from the beginning. I was at their first event at the Castle in 2011 as well as last year's event at the House of Blues. And from the beginning I was extremely impressed by the way it was run, and also how exciting it was to watch amateur boxing live. I always wanted to be a part of it, I just haven't had the opportunity until now. And to make things even more exciting...my fiancée, Maria Tedeschi, is fighting too...a month before our wedding!
Maria and I both have family members that have been affected by cancer. Maria's mother fought breast cancer and has been cancer free for over 10 years. My father was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in the spring of 2010, but with the help of an experimental treatment was able to win his fight. He is still hurting from the side affects of the treatment 3 years later, but is pushing to get back on the golf course as soon as possible (he sneaks out for a couple holes every now and then even though he was told to stay in and rest).
More recently my sister-in-law, Christina, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. She has a 2 year old son and a 15 month old daughter. Needless to say it was a horrible surprise for her and my brother's family. They had a few hard months fighting the extremely rare form of breast cancer. After months of chemo and a few surgeries, Christina got a full response from the treatment and her and her family are getting their lives back to normal. Hopefully within the next 5 years she will have a full recovery.
This is our chance to literally fight against the foe that has so drastically attacked our families. It is our first time in the ring and training at Quietman Gym in Medford has been a blast. People have been calling us crazy for fighting our opponents at the Haymaker's event just a month before our summer wedding, but we think it's a great bonding experience for us! Let me tell you, it's not fun getting punched in the face a few nights a week, but with Maria's support it's easy to keep on fighting.
Please come watch our fights on May 16th at the House of Blues! And thank you for all your generous donations to such a great cause! Help us to literally fight cancer!
