Doug's epilepsy journey
When Doug was five years old he sustained a head injury. After that day life changed for him. He was anxious, started having major mood swings and staring spells. He was diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder, depression, and labeled a difficult child. When he was 16 he we found wonderful doctors who took the time to investigate his symptoms and not just write it off as psychiatric problems. After loads of testing he was finally diagnosed with Complex Partial Seizures. After a few years of medication trials and testing it was determined that he was a candidate for Epilepsy Surgery. He had his surgery on Oct 3, 2011 and developed an infection. Due to the infection he developed osteomyelitis and had to have part of his skull removed, his skin broke down from the infection and to had have a tissue expander placed to stretch his skin in order to replace the broken down skin. In all Doug has had ten surgeries the past two years to help resolve the infection and repair his skull and skin. Although he has had many complications from the surgery we believe we have finally reached the end of the tunnel and Doug is finally ready to go on and live his life to his fullest potential. He has shown great strength and patience and has shown us how determined he is to beat this. This September we are walking for “Team Doug and Brody” to help raise epilepsy awareness so that no other child will ever go undiagnosed due to having “non-typical” symptoms of seizures.
