HELLO!!! I was all smiles when the email came through notifying me that you had donated to the 5K! I love seeing the photos of your family and am so thankful that we can be connected one way or another! (For instance, that cookbook! I think of you every time I use it! The super coleslaw has become a summer staple in our house!) Hugs and Love to you all!

We wanted to take a moment to say “THANK YOU!!!” for your recent donation to support your friends and family as they participate in the SOBO Project 5K Run/Walk to End Human Trafficking. One exciting aspect of this 5K is that we are able to talk to more people than any one person at The River South Center knows in order to raise awareness about Human Trafficking.

Trafficking is a form of slavery where people kidnap, trick, or bribe people in order to profit from them by selling them for sex, using them for labor, and/or profiting from their organs.

The River South Center in Quincy, MA is joining forces with people locally and around the world to combat human trafficking. We are working to raise awareness and create safe spaces for at-risk people groups. One of the very exciting things we are now doing is something called Arrojo, a café concept that is open from 7:00 – 9:00pm on the 2nd Fridays. Each night has a theme, (ex: karaoke, game night, open mic, movie night, etc,) a theme flavor for drinks, and a theme dessert. The exciting thing about Arrojo is that proceeds go to non-profits that are working to combat human trafficking. So not only do you get to have fun while drinking a fair trade drink, you also get to support some great organizations! Our next Arrojo evening will be Friday, October 14th. 

Also, this year’s fundraising efforts are going to support a safe house north of Boston called Amirah. Of the 17 beds that exist for trafficking survivors in Massachusetts, Amirah holds 8 of them. Amirah works to provide whole person care: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and vocational resources. Care is expensive in America, and Amirah has hopes of expanding the number of people they can serve. We are excited to be able to partner with them.

There are lots of steps that each of us can take towards ending slavery. One is that we can spread the word. Tell others what you learn and what steps you are taking. Another is that we can become better consumers. Often times we support trafficking with our dollar without even knowing it. One great resource is the Better World Shopper website.

Again, thank you so much for your donation. I can’t say enough about the Free the Slaves TED talk. If you have a social media page, it’s worth a share. The more people we can tell, the more likely we are to reach our goals of ending human trafficking.

All the best to you and yours!

We are working to raise awareness, create safe spaces for at-risk people groups, and raise funds for the center’s goals of workforce training, after-school programs, a fair trade coffee shop, and short-term housing options. Over the course of this last year, we have worked to connect with local businesses (which led to identifying trafficking happening in Quincy) and have hosted several events for local Youth.
