BENEFITING: Somaly Mam Foundation
EVENT DATE: Jul 02, 2013
This year, I will be giving up my birthday for charity. I will not be accepting any gifts; monetary or material. nope not even a drink at the bar (ok maybe just one). Instead of giving me a $100 gift, or going out for a $50 dinner, or buying me a $20 drink, I'd like to utilize that money for people who actually need it. On my 23rd birthday (July 2nd), my goal is to raise $1,000 to donate to the Somaly Mam Foundation, a charity that centralizes around ending sexual slavery and trafficking.
So what does your money get you?
$25 the cost of one month of materials for a survivor to learn sewing, hairdressing, weaving, computer training, English, life skills, business management and agriculture.
$30 the cost of a medical exam for a woman or girl who has been exploited in the sex trade.
$54 the cost per month to provide a one woman or girl with three nutritious meals per day in the shelter.
$135 covers all services and provisions for one survivor for one month, including food, accommodation, education and training.
$400 the cost of annual tuition for a survivor attending university.
$1,200 covers a "start-up" kit with everything a woman needs to start her own small business in the reintegration process, plus follow-up support.
$3,000 the approximate cost to take one woman or girl through the entire journey from rescue to recovery, education, and finally reintegration with new economic opportunities, dignity and hope.
