BENEFITING: Red River Valley Down Syndrome Society
As part of my employer's summer fitness challenge, we have been given the opportunity to raise donations for the charity of our choice. I am walking for the Red River Valley Down Syndrome Society.
Down syndrome continues to be the most common chromosomal disorder. Each year, about 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome, which is about 1 in every 700 babies born.
Founded in 2004 by parents of a child with Down syndrome, the organization strives to offer support to families while educating both the community and those involved in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome. The organization serves a 12-county area in Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma, but has members all over the United States.
