Dear Friends, It has been s…
Dear Friends,

It has been some time, so I've wanted to reach out and send an update to all of you who have shown that you care.

Ari continues to struggle, mentally-speaking. It took ten months of care and treatment at a forensic psychiatric facility to get him 'stabilized' to the point that he was regularly eating, taking his meds, sleeping, and refraining from self-harming behaviors. He wore prison clothes and we had regular visits, even though it was a four-hour drive for me each way and even though the visits consisted of talking on the phone through a glass window.

Then, the staff saw that he had improved so they returned him to the same provincial prison which had written letters that they were not equipped to manage him or meet his mental health needs. In essence, his 'reward' for responding well to the care and treatment was to withdraw it. Within one week, he 'decompensated', their term for totally falling apart. The next 3 weeks, he continually banged his hands on the wall of his cell so severely that twice he had to be taken to the local hospital to check for broken bones in his hands. No more visits or phone calls, no more prison clothes (replaced with a sleeveless white 'security robe') and no more basic bathroom facilities (replaced with a hole in the floor).

It took one month (and $25,000 of legal bills) for the lawyer to succeed in having him return to the psychiatric forensic facility. He has been back there for 5 wks but he is still hanging on by a thread. He had stopped eating and taking his meds for a while and even though they were concerned about his weight loss, they were unable to weigh him because he lunges at the guards when they go near to him for any reason. It is now 11 weeks since I have been allowed to see Ari or even talk to him on the phone.

Forgive me for a less than positive update; believe me, I wish it were different. From a legal point of view, the trial is still another 12 months away. I hope and pray Ari will make it that long, though I know that HaShem is giving me strength to endure and is sustaining Ari as well.

Please us both in your prayers, and please consider making another contribution toward his continually mounting legal costs.
