I've been working for Food Bank of Central New York as the Communications Associate for about a year now. So behind the scenes all that cool website stuff and awesome social media activity is me.
Since the beginning of my time working here, I knew the Food Bank had a huge impact in our community, but believe it or not the Food Bank does more than just deliver millions of pounds of food to 11 counties in central and northern New York- shocking right?
Delivering that much food seems like a big enough feat in and of itself to accomplish, but the Food Bank doesn't stop there. Here are a few of the community food service programs that we provide year round:
- Food$en$e - A food buying co-op program. AKA - spend $15.50 on a food package that would normally cost you $30 - $40 at a grocery store.
- Fresh Foods - Food Bank drivers visit grocery stores in our area (Wegmans, Tops, Hannafords, Target, Walmart, etc.) and rescue fresh produce - on a daily basis I might add - that otherwise would have gone to waste. In other words, that bruised apple or tomato you might pass up that the store most likely won't sell, might end up on one of our trucks and then directly into the hands of a hungry individual - AT NO CHARGE!
- SNAP Outreach- our very own SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) outreach team works around the clock every day to connect individuals who are visiting one of our 362 food programs (pantries soup kitchens etc.) with assistance programs like SNAP and WIC to help encourage and increase self-sufficiency.
If all of that wasn't enough - here is where I became hooked and why I decided to run the boilermaker and fundraise this summer...
The Food Bank is a proud participant of the USDA Summer Feeding Service Program.
Pay attention: Most people are aware of the 22 million children who receive free or reduced-priced meals through the National School Lunch Program. And as the bells ring for summer, the general air and feeling should be one of excitement and glee... But think about those 22 million children who go home and face 2 months without those free meals.
The Summer Feeding Service Program provides 2.7 million children with free or reduced-price meals during the summer months. Awesome right?! I thought so.
On top of that, the Food Bank helps to address the remaining gap of 19.3 million hungry children with Kids Cafe - a program that provides free meals and snacks through a variety of community locations (Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, churches or public schools). In addition to providing meals to kids, Kids Cafes offer a safe place where children can participate in educational, recreational, and social activities under the supervision of trustworthy staff.
So if you're thinking about donating, keep these kids in mind knowing that your donation will go towards programs that help meet the needs of low-income children and their families who face hunger in the summer.
So that's a little bit about me and why I'm participating in the Boilermaker Charity Bib Program this year- because I whole heartedly believe in the mission of the wonderful place I work- Food Bank of Central New York.
