I'm running the Bay to Breakers with the Drake High School Daraja Club, to raise money and support the students, like my partner Molly, working hard at the Daraja Academy in Kenya. Daraja academy takes in ambitious young women who show leadership skills and the drive to learn and succeed. Through eduction they avoid the common fate of many Kenyan girls who end up poverty stricken, or prostitutes because they were never given the oportunity to reach their full potential.
Molly: Though Molly grew up in abject poverty, she never lost hope or neglected her studies. Her father passed away last year before she sat to take her 8th grade evaluations. Even with the pain of his passing, her scores were good, but there was no money for her to continue her education. In fact, when the family learned that Daraja Academy was interviewing students from Western Kenya in Nankuru, they didn’t have the money to buy the bus fare so Molly and her mother could attend. Two roundtrip tickets cost $8. With the help of organizations like our club Molly is getting a great education and hopes to be an environmentalist.
