BENEFITING: Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc.
I was recently selected to be on the Young Professionals Board of a non-profit organization called Jumpstart. Jumpstart focuses on young children's literacy. What our organization is trying to correct is an imbalance that exists between wealthy and less fortunate kids who are at a major disadvantage by the time they are ready to attend kindergarten. If these kids fall behind at this stage of learning, the odds of catching up as they progress is less and less as time goes on. Jumpstart gets involved by providing a curriculum that will enable these kids to get on a level playing field with some of their other classmates. Jumpstart pairs an Americorps member or college student with one of these kids for a year and serves as a tutor and mentor. They enter the classroom on a daily basis reading to the students in an effort to continue to push forward their literacy as much as possible. The difference between students from affluent areas and poorer neighborhoods is substantial. At around the same time a student from a more affluent background has read 32,000 words a student from a poorer neighborhood has read about 7,000 words. Many of these kids are not ready for kindergarten but they are pushed through the system regardless of what their abilities may be. As a member of the Young Professionals Board my main task is to raise money for the organization. The YPB goal for fundraising has been set at $45,000. Every penny counts. I would ask that you donate what you can to this great cause and even a donation as small as $5 matters! If you would like more information about Jumpstart you can go to our website at www.jstart.org.
