BENEFITING: JUNIOR LEAGUE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK INC
ORGANIZER: JUNIOR LEAGUE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
I am so happy and proud to be raising money on behalf of an organization that means so much to me and accomplishes so much for the community.
In 2007, I joined the Junior League of Washington, just because I wanted to make some friends. In 2008, when I moved to NYC, I transferred without a second thought. Yes, I again joined to make friends, but I was so impressed by the hard work that this organization does. 2,600 brilliant, hard-working, type-A NYC women come together to make NYC a better place for underserved women and children through adult education and mentoring; children's health, education and welfare; and bringing culture and the arts to populations who might not otherwise have access.
When I was growing up, my parents read to me every single night. At a recent Community Issues Forum, I was shocked to hear from one of our community partners that when we come in to volunteer with some of these kids, they've never seen a book before.
We work with everyone from victims of domestic violence to incarcerated women — giving them the skills to change their lives. We volunteer 10,000 hours every year in NYC parks to clean them up to provide valuable, clean public space to our city. Recently, we've taken on the Community Improvement Project, which provides a $50,000 grant to one organization who needs crucial funding.
I ran communications for this amazing organization for four years, so I can go on and on about the great work that we do, but you probably get the point.
On a personal level, being a volunteer in this organization has changed my life. It's given me lifelong friends, an endless support system, a wide, wide professional network and leadership skills that have helped me at work.
Similarly, running has given so much to my life since I took up the hobby in 2009. It's changed me for the better, and it's made me realize how much I can accomplish if I push myself.
So when the email went out about the NYJL NYC Marathon team, I was giddy with excitement. I am SO excited to raise money for such an important organization. The money I raise will go towards helping to fund these crucial community programs.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Below, our mission and a bit more info:
The New York Junior League (NYJL) is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
We have more than 2,600 volunteers - of all races, religions, and ethnicities - who donate more than 250,000 hours of service in the NYC community every year. We train volunteers to develop skills for community work, to serve on boards, and to be leaders.
