On October 18, 2013, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Within two days of my first doctors appointment, I had undergone scans, blood work, and surgery followed by a call confirming my diagnosis. This was all one week before my 28th birthday, and less than one month from my wedding. As I’m sure it is for anybody who is diagnosed with cancer, this came as quite a shock to me. I wasn’t sure how to cope and was looking for resources to help me feel more confident about what I was about to encounter during my 9 weeks of chemotherapy.
Through my research I came across Imerman Angels which provides 1-on-1 mentor support to those being affected by cancer. I was paired with a cancer survivor that had been down the road that I was about to travel. After our first conversation, I knew I had found exactly what I was needing to help me feel more confident as he was able to give me a ‘no B.S.’ brief of what to expect over the coming weeks. My mentor and I communicated regularly with phone calls, texts and emails. Next to my wife and other close family and friends, my mentor was amazing support throughout my journey both during and post treatment.
Over the course of getting to know one another, my mentor had mentioned his goal of running the St. Louis Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in October 2014. The decision to do this race and raise money for Imerman Angels was a simple one. The date of the race is almost a year to date of my diagnosis and with the race being in St. Louis, this means that I will be able to meet my mentor in person for the first time and complete this milestone with him and my wife. Raising money for Imerman Angels means that I will be able to help others facing cancer get the help and support that I received. In addition to this fundraiser, I will also be trying my hand at being a mentor in order to help others directly. Please help me in reaching my goal of raising $700 for such a meaningful cause. If you are unable to donate financially, please help me spread the word of this amazing organization. Until a cure is found, we are all in this together.
Thank you in advance for your support!
