BENEFITING: SMALL THINGS
EVENT DATE: Jan 01, 2015
"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have" - Margaret Mead
This quote perfectly applies to The Small Things organization located in Tanzania Africa who are a group of people doing just that by caring for and empowering one person at a time through their programs and projects. Those "small things" are indeed changing the world in some way, even if not on a grand scale and this simple approach is just one of many reasons that helped me make my decision to volunteer with The Small Things aside from wanting to be a part of that change.
However, I cannot do it alone. While I'm doing everything I can think of to raise funds for my airfare, visa, vaccinations and spending money during my time at The Small Things, I would still greatly appreciate any help that my family, friends, and others who are interested can offer in support of this great organization. By donating through Crowdrise you will help me achieve my fundraising requirements as a volunteer. Your support will go straight to the organization to cover the operational costs of the orphanage and hospital, community outreach, education, and needed infrastructure projects that offer long-term solutions rather than typical band-aid solutions.
My goal is raise $500, of which:
$300 is used to support the staff and children at the Nkoaranga orphanage.
"This is established through a $75 Fundraising target per week of stay at The Small Things. This goes directly to supporting the children and staff of the orphanage. It costs $6500 per month to cover The Small Things' work, so your $300 over 4 weeks will help us run for 36 hours, this adds up to vital funds to help the community." (The Small Things volunteeering costs packet)
$200 is given to the Nkoaranga Lutheran Hospital who funds the orphanage directly.
" [This] $200 One-off donation [goes to] the hospital. The orphanage is on the same site as, and is part of, the Nkoaranga Lutheran hospital. They help to directly fund the orphanage and prepare visa letters for volunteers."
The Small Things is a true non-profit and a 501c3 organization under FEIN 45-2466306.
"All money goes directly to the cost of your stay, e.g. accommodation, or to supporting the orphanage and its work. Nothing goes on administration and no profit is made."
***I'm also raising money for other mandatory volunteer costs, which are an additional $500, by selling Scentsy products. Scentsy sells home fragrance items, such as candle warmers and other room fresheners that come in a variety of wonderful scents. You can also purchase bath and body products as well as laundry products, and they even sell adorable stuffed animals for your little ones. You can shop for products on my own personal website by going to jenwilson.scentsy.us. Every cent I make from selling these products will go toward these other volunteer costs, which include my airfare (approx. $2,000), room and board ($200), visas ($300), and required vaccinations (??).***
There are so many worthwhile causes out there that need more support than I do, but I can truthfully say that every single dollar helps, no matter how much you are able to give!
