Just 36 hours ago we brought home an adorable 3 year old miniature poodle-mix we've named Marcus. We are fostering through a local small breed rescue group with the intention of adoption and making his forever home with us! He went him to the vet today for a checkup, and we were given some pretty sad news. Over 50% of his two bottom canine teeth, as well as his two upper incisors, have snapped off, exposing the roots and causing some pretty awful puppy pain. While he does not show outward signs of pain (brave boy!), it impacts his ability to eat and drink comfortably, and if left untreated, will only worsen with time.
How did his teeth wind up this way? The rescue group we are fostering through in turn rescued Marcus from a pound, and is unsure of his story, but the mostly likely cause of this damage is from aggressive chewing on the bars of a cage (We have NO idea who could keep this adorable little guy locked up- he's such a goof that wants nothing more than perpetual belly rubs!).
The most common treatment for this condition is a simple tooth extraction, which can be easily managed on the top teeth, but the bottom canines run so deep into the jaw, removing them could severely weaken the structural integrity of his little bottom jawbone. The only solution to ensure the safety of his jaw and lessen his pain is a double root canal. The estimated cost of a double extraction AND a double root canal is approximately $3,000. Yikes!
As a recent graduate and a current student, this expense is far from within our means. We are able to contribute several hundred dollars of our own money, but want to work with the rescue group to fundraise the remaining amount. The rescue group would also have to fund raise in order to make this surgery possible, so we've decided to help them out and ask our internet community for a helping hand. This rescue group does incredible work helping little dogs find their forever homes. Please, help us make this adoption possible, and help greatly improve the quality of Marcus' life!
