8 years ago when I was 15 years old my life changed in an instant. I woke up during marching band one morning in June 2007 to discover I could no longer walk on my own. I had lost sensation and motor control of my left leg. It took 2 years and many doctors appointment before I finally got a diagnosis for what was going on. I was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare neuro-immunue disease that causes inflamation of the spinal cord resulting in spinal cord injury.
Transverse Myelitis is a life long journey and everyone has different levels of recovery. Even though I have made great strides, I still have a long way to go. I still have no sensation in my left leg, I still walk with AFO's and I still have many more doctors appointments and therapy sessions ahead of me. But no matter what my limitations may be I like to look at the gains I have made over the limitations I still have.
The diseases supported by TMA can affect anyone at any time of any gender, race or age. No one is immune and no one is genetically predisposed. It just takes a minute for your life to change forever.
"Transverse Myelitis has my spine, but not my spirit. I'm a FIGHTER."
