BENEFITING: PACIFICA ENVIRONMENTAL FAMILY
EVENT DATE: Jul 16, 2016
The all volunteer-run 17th Annual Kahuna Kupuna Benefit Surf Contest (aka "The Kupuna") will take place on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica, CA from 7 AM until 5 PM. This annual event is the major fundraiser for Pacifica's Environmental Family (PEF), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit.
By serving as a non-profit fiscal sponsor, PEF supports grass roots environmental projects led by Pacificans who are dedicated to educating the general public about protecting and enhancing the natural beauty of Pacifica. PEF's largest sponsored project is the Pacifica Beach Coalition. Led by Lynn Adams and her army of dedicated volunteers, they recruit thousands of volunteers to participate in beach clean ups throughout the year and is the driving force behind Pacifica's annual Earth Day and Eco-festival each April.
Funds raised through Crowdrise will help to underwrite the expenses of the Kahuna Kupuna contest which include, among other things, insurance, permit and rental fees, food, trophies and event t-shirts. Your support will be greatly appreciated. For everyone who makes a donation of $30 or more, they will receive an event t-shirt by August 1, 2016.
Kahuna Kupuna, in Hawaiian, means "Big Chief older member of the community who others go to for advice and counsel" and was a term taught to Roy Earnest, the contest's organizer by the late, great Rell Sunn who was a modern day ambassador of the aloha spirit until her untimely death in 2000.
Besides being a fundraiser, the Kupuna is the only amateur surf contest in the world that has a special focus on surfers age 40 and over. We welcome men/women longboarders, short boarders and SUP contestants of all abilities in true aloha spirit. The contest's various sub-divisions for surfers age 40 plus are segmented by age: 40 - 49, 50 - 54, 55 - 59, 60 - 64, 65 - 69, 70 - 74, 75 - 79 and 80 plus.
As a way to also include younger surfers, we offer the Intergenerational Team Division. Kupuna (older) surfers are invited each year to form intergenerational teams of 6 surfers each that represent 3 generations. Each team must have at least one surfer under 20 years of age, another under 40 years of age and another at least 55 years of age or above. The remaining 3 surfers on each team can be of any age. Our SUP division also welcomes surfers of all ages. More information about the various divisions can be found at www.pacificasenvironmentalfamily.org/kahunakupuna.
Besides being a fundraiser for Pacifica's Environmental Family, the "Kupuna's" other goals is to shine a spotlight on the ever increasing numbers of older surfers who continue to pursue their passion for the ocean's waves. It also hopes to combat ageism by sending a message out to the rest of the world that just because a person is over a "certain age", they can still keep doing things that they love to do. While not everyone can surf into their 40s and beyond, surfing is still within reach for many which can be seen at many surf spots around the world on a good day. Events like this encourage everyone to stay active and healthy as possible so they can continue to engage in activities they love to do, whatever that happens to be.
Spectators are welcome and, unless you choose to surf in the contest, admission is free. The more people on the beach having a good time and cheering their favorite surfers on, the better.
If you have questions, you are welcome to contact Roy Earnest at 650-438-6378 or send him an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
