Kait & Arlene Lynes
My story begins in 1963 when as an 18 month year old I became ill with a condition known as ITP, (a blood disorder is the easiest way to describe it). I was placed under the care of a Dr. in NY’s famed Columbia Presbyterian Babies Hospital. At age 3, I had my spleen removed and was kept isolated from other children until I entered school. It was believed that I could get sick very easily and I must be watched over carefully. At about the age of 46 I decided to train for a 5K, something totally foreign and out of my comfort zone. It was at that time that I got the idea that for my 50th birthday I should run the NYC marathon to show that I had come full circle, a complete recovery but also a healthy and strong adult. However, I never again ran after the 5k in 2009 and the 2012 NYC marathon was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. It was then that my daughter Kait got wind of this dream and said she would train me and we would run the marathon together. We began our training on February 18th and I have so far completed a 5k, 10k and a half-marathon. We will be charity runners for Grassroot Soccer, an organization Kait interned with this past year. When I run I think not only of the children in hospitals around the world, but also their parents. It is my hope to give those parents the hope they need that their children will overcome their illness and lead healthy lives.
I'm not a runner. I've always been a soccer player, so deciding to intern with Grassroot Soccer was an easy decision. I spent part of 2012 and 2013 living and working in Port Elizabeth, South Africa where I experienced the Skillz curriculum first hand. When I found out about my mom's interest in running the NYC Marathon for her 50th birthday, it only seemed natural to run for an organization I cared so much about and help her train in the process. So here I am, pretending to be a runner. Thanks for helping get us across the finish line - every donation helps!
