This year as I run my 7th Boston Marathon I am raising funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Boston. The mission of the Boys and Girls club is to help young people, especially those who need us most, build strong character and realize their full potential as responsible citizens and leaders.
The BGCB provides service and opportunities to over 14,000 youth a year, ranging in from 6-18. The average household income of these children is $27,000 per year. The Boys and Girls Club programs help youth develop into responsible citizens by providing real skills, igniting passions, and inspiring confidence about their future. They focus on six core initiatives: Arts; Education; Leadership; Life Skills; Sports, Fitness and Recreation; and Technology.
I myself have been very fortunate with many opportunities that have been provided to me. My parents were able to provide myself and two sister's the chance to compete in atheltics (swimming) and through this I learned discipline, focus, values, teamwork, confidence and dedication. What I learned as a youth in the pool has carried into my adult life and has helped me be as succesful as I am. In addition to working for John Hancock, I am also the Head Swim coach for Hingham High school. While I love to watch my swimmers succeed in the pool I also enjoy teaching them what I learned through swimming. I am also part of the Big Sister program. I feel this program helped me to open my eyes to those who are less fortunate in our area. In working with my "little sister" I have been able to see first hand the importance of having positive role models and success children have when given opportunity. Many city children do not have the funds available to be able to participate in extra curricular activities while others feel the BGCB is their family. This is where I am asking for your assitance. If you could please help donate to a great cause that will provide opportunities to a child less forunate it would be greatly appreciated. Any amount would be greatly appreciated and help me help "pay it forward" Thanks again and look forward to seeing you all along the route :)
